About Artist & Art Details

Catrin Webster is an artist interested in contemporary post digital painting practice who poses the following questions to herself in her art:

‘How can landscape be defined in the twenty first century and to what extent does history and contemporary art practice inform us about landscape. In what way can painting explore a contemporary experience of landscape in a post conceptual context. What is the inter relationship between the language of painting and other two dimensional media such as film, photography and print and how can painting exploit this relationship to continually reinvent itself?

In the work conducted as part of the commission for Twr y Felin Hotel and in relation to the fundamental questions above, a study of light in relation to landscape perception and colour is central. As it is our relationship to light which underpins our phenomenological experience of place and connects contemporary lens based technologies to the potentials of painting.’

Catrin has exhibited widely both in the United Kingdom and overseas, including solo exhibitions in Reykjavik, Rome and group exhibitions curated by the Ikon, Birmingham, Mostyn, Llandudno and the Qatar International Cultural Festival, Doha. She has been awarded a number of prestigious fellowships and grants including A Creative Wales Award and Abbey Fellowship at the British School in Rome. Examples of Webster’s work can be seen in both private and public collections, including the Arts Council of Great Britain Collection, Hayward Gallery, London.
